GLOSSARY

Gross Enrolment Rate (GER): GER is the number of students, irrespective of their age, enrolled at a level of education in a given year, as a percentage of the age group population specified for that level of education in the same year.

Net Enrolment Rate (NER): NER is the number of students of the respective age group specified for that level of education in a given year, as a percentage of the age group population specified for that level of education in the same year.

Literate: Person who is able to read and write in any language with simple arithmetic is considered as literate.

Currently School Going Population: A person is said to be currently attending school if s/he has been enrolled in school and attending school for the study. Similarly, those students who are in leave according to the school rules or those students who are not attending school at the time of enumeration because of sickness or casual leave is also considered as currently attending school. If a person has never enrolled in school or dropout from school due to any reason, then s/he is categorized as currently not school going person. In population census 2001, question on school attendance were asked to the people aged 6-25 years who have not completed 10th grade.

Usually Economically Active: A person is said to be usually economically active if the total duration of work done and/or seeking work in a year is greater than or equal to six months.

Extended Economic Activity: This activity refers to the collection of wood, water and production of goods etc. for consumption within the household.

Employed: A person is said to be employed if s/he is economically active and total duration of work done including extended economic activity is greater than duration of work seeking.

Paid employee: If the status of an employed person is employee then it is called paid employee.

Employment status: Employment status refers to status of an individual with respect to his/her category of employment. A usually employed person may work in any one of the following categories.

Employer: An employer is a person who operates his/ her own economic enterprise or engages independently in a profession or a trade and hires one or more employees.

Employee: - An employee is a person who works for public or private employer and receives remuneration in terms of ways, salary, commission, piece rates or pay in kind.

Own account worker: An own account worker is a person who operates his/her economic enterprise or engages independently in a profession or trade and hires no employees.

Unpaid family worker: An unpaid family worker is a person who works without pay in economic enterprises operated by a person living in the same household.

Occupational status: Occupation of an individual refers to the kind of work done during a selected reference time period (past 12 months) irrespective of industry in which the individuals works on his/her status in employment. Occupation of a person, who works more than one job refers to the job at which the individual spends more time. If the time spent in two jobs is equal, then the occupation refers to the job that gives higher income.

White Collar Occupation: This includes legislators, senior officials and managers, professionals, technicians & associate professionals, clerks or office assistants.

Agriculture and Related: This refers to skilled and semi skilled workers in agriculture.

Other Occupation: This includes service workers, and sales workers, crafts and related trade workers, plant and machine operators and elementary occupations.

Industry: The term industry refers to the activity of the establishment where an active person worked during the reference period. In other words, the kind of goods produced or services supplied during the reference period, by the unit in which the person works is specified as industry.

Agriculture: This broadly encompasses Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing.

Industry: This includes Mining and Quarrying, Manufacturing, Electricity, Gas and Water, and Construction.

Services: Here Wholesale/Retail Trade, Hotels and Restaurants, Communication and Transport, Financial Intermediation, Real State, Renting & Business, Public Administration and Defense, Community, Social and Personal Services are included.

Non-agricultural sector: The non-agricultural sector includes all paid employed population engaged in industry and services as classified in industrial group.

Household: A household is a unit formed by a person or persons related or unrelated, living together and sharing the food from the same kitchen with a sole management of income and expenditure to run the household.

Household Head: A household head is defined as a main person in the household who generally stays in the house and shoulders the responsibility of income and expenditure in running the household and take the decision in all family related matters.

Improved source of drinking water: Water from piped line; well and tube-well are taken as improved source of drinking water.

Solid fuel: Firewood, kerosene, LPG, biogas, cow dung are the various sources of fuel used for cooking. Some other sources of fuel are leaves, straw and thatches. Among these, firewood, cow dung, leaves, straw, thatches are considered as solid fuel.

Dependency Ratio: The ratio of the economically dependent part of the population to productive part, arbitrarily defined as the ratio of the elderly (those 60 years and above) plus the young (those under 15 years of age) to the population in the "working ages" (those 15-59 years of age).

Sex Ratio: It is defined as number of males per hundred females.

Marital status: Marital status of a person is classified as follows:
Never Married: Person who has not lived as husband and wife even once up to the time of census enumeration is classified as never married.

Living with single spouse: Person who is married for the first time and living with one spouse only is classified as living with single spouse.

Living with more than one spouse: Person who is married more that once and living with two or more spouses is classified as living with more than one spouse.

Remarried: Person who married more than once but living with one spouse only is classified as remarried.

Widow/ Widower: Women whose husband is lost by death and has not remarried up to the time of census enumeration is called widowed. Similarly, man whose wife is lost by death and has not remarried up to the time of census enumeration is called widower.

Divorced: Person who married but could not live together because of ones conflict and so living separately by legal or social process is classified as divorced.

Separated: Person who married but could not live together because of ones conflict and living separately without legal or social process is classified as separated.

Type of house: A house is a living quarter with four walls and a roof of any material with one or more rooms and stories or flats. Depending upon the type of materials used for constructing the walls and roofs of the house, a house is divided into the following four categories:

Permanent: Both the walls and roof of the house is built with permanent materials like cement, concrete, bricks.

Semi-permanent: Either wall or roof is built with permanent materials and the other is built with temporary materials.

Temporary: Both the walls and roof of the house is built with temporary materials like mud, straw, bamboo, plastics etc.

Others: This includes house like structures built with very temporary and endurable materials like straw, plastics, tent etc.

Female ownership in house/land: If one or more female members of a household possess a legal ownership of house and/or land, irrespective of its use and location, then the household is termed as household with some female ownership of house and/or land.

Note: To maintain reliability of estimates, indicator values for some caste/ethnicity having less than 30 cases in the sample (before adjusting by raising factor) are not shown.
